People often ask where the name Hidden Door Tattoo comes from. Most assume it’s because the studio itself is a little tucked away — a lil hidden spot you have to discover. And that’s not totally wrong. Our tattoo studio in East Nashville is a bit off the beaten path (or at least the original location was…) But we realize that we’re on Gallatin now and you can Google “Hidden Door” and find us ~super easily~
The real story behind the name goes a little deeper.
The Original Name: Hiddur
Originally, the shop was going to be called Hiddur.
Hiddur is a Hebrew word connected to a Jewish spiritual concept called “hiddur mitzvah.” A mitzvah is a meaningful action or responsibility — something good that we’re called to do. But hiddur mitzvah means beautifying the mitzvah, going beyond the minimum requirement and doing it with care, beauty, and intention.
For example, it’s a mitzvah to light a candle for Hanukkah. But hiddur mitzvah means lighting that candle in a beautiful menorah, or lighting all eight candles rather than just one.
The idea is simple: don’t just do the bare minimum. Elevate it.
How Hiddur Mitzvah Connects to Tattooing
That idea really resonated with me when I was thinking about tattooing and the human body.
We all have a responsibility to take care of our bodies. We eat, we rest, we survive. But what if we go beyond that? What if we celebrate the body instead? For many people, tattoos are part of that celebration.
Tattooing can be a way of honoring the body, decorating it, and expressing who we are. Rather than coming from a place of insecurity, tattoos come from appreciation. When you get a new tattoo, you are saying, “I love living in this body, and I want to create something meaningful on it!”
That was the spirit behind the name Hiddur — the idea of elevating something that already has value. And that’s something we think about a lot at our Nashville tattoo shop, where tattoos are treated as both personal expression and lasting artwork.
From Hiddur to Hidden Door
There was one practical problem with this shop name: most people have no idea how to pronounce or spell Hiddur.
I realized pretty quickly that it might not be the most practical name for a tattoo studio in Nashville. If someone couldn’t spell the name, it would be hard to find the shop or tell their friends about it.
But the more I said the word out loud 💬 Hiddur… Hiddur… 💬 something clicked.
Hidden Door.
And suddenly it felt like the perfect evolution of the idea.
A hidden door is something you discover. It’s not always obvious at first, but once you find it, it opens into something new. Creativity works a lot like that.
All of us have creativity, imagination, and self-expression inside us, but sometimes we have to search for it. Sometimes we need a little help finding the door. That’s what Hidden Door Tattoo is meant to be.
Our goal as a tattoo shop in Nashville isn’t just to create custom tattoos; it’s also to help people explore their creativity, celebrate their bodies, and leave with something meaningful they’ll carry with them for life.
If there’s a hidden door inside each of us, our job is to help you find it.
